Our Journey
2012
The erstwhile quiet, low-density suburb close to State House suddenly becomes open to new developments as Nairobi City grows and demand for high-end housing increases. Previously a low-density residential area, Kilimani begin seeing the rise of apartment complexes and the expansion of road networks to open up the estate.
2013
The Kilimani Project Foundation is registered. Apex Communications, a company owned by an active resident, offers to host the first Kilimani Project Foundation office. Several breakfasts are hosted by Yaya Center to clarify our vision for Kilimani driven by the first Foundation Board. Later in the year, the foundation co-hosted Mandela Day with the South African High Commission. This was part of a broader partnership framework with the myriad of embassies and consulates that were headquartered in Kilimani. As a first step towards inclusivity, the foundation rallied to support the Kilimani Primary School - one of the most visible public schools in Kilimani - to improve their school library, fruit garden, and canteen and to construct a swimming pool for the children.
2014
The Kilimani Project Foundation expands its scope from planned development advocacy to the general well-being of the neighbourhood. The Foundation participates in the formulation of the NIUPLAN - a Nairobi Masterplan done by the Japan Study Team through a unique collaboration of the Japanese and Kenyan governments. This plan develops concepts of sustainable urban development and improvement of living conditions based on an integrated urban development plan for Nairobi City. Socially, the foundation organizes several community street cleanups, a medical camp, and a community police open day and night of poetry with Sitawa Namwalie.
2015
Advocacy with the City County of Nairobi leads to the cleaning of the Kirichwa Kubwa river and the inclusion of our priorities in the approved Ward Budget. Town Hall dialogues take place with the Kilimani Police and the Korogocho community as part of the #NaiNiWho? exchanges.
2016
Kilimani gets an Organic Farmers Market and a plan to renovate the Kilimani Police Station is launched. Two campaigns #ICantSleep and #Grey2Green are launched to reduce noise pollution and plant trees throughout the ward. The Foundation and Fintech complete a Kilimani business survey.
2017
Being an election year, two dialogues give Kilimanians an opportunity to know their aspirants. The Foundation begins to get more involved in urban planning and policy conversations. Two submissions challenged the attempt to privatize Nairobi Water and Sanitation Company and the re-zoning and densification of Nairobi. Three street festivals are arranged and an end-year concert attracts over 800 people on average.
2018
The Foundation publicly represented residents’ concerns on the proposed Cytonn Towers and Physical Plan for Kilimani as well as noise pollution concerns. Over 2,000 trees are planted in the ward and plans begin to establish a solid waste recycling project. We launch Kilimani WhatsApp groups.
